WE CELEBRATED MINDEN PRIDE’S 5TH YEAR!

MONDAY, August 24

FLAG RAISING

Video Link: Flag
We celebrated the kick-off of our 5th year of Minden Pride week of events with the official raising of the Rainbow Flag over our Minden Hills Municipal Building. The flag was by raised our chairperson, David Rankin, followed by a message from Haliburton County Warden Liz Danielson, and in-person greetings from Minden Mayor Brent Devolin and our Member of Parliament, Jamie Schmale.

Our new Pridemobile, tent, sail and bling were on display across the street at ‘Plum Plaza”.

FREE DRIVE-IN MOVIE NIGHT – Feature Film and Short
We sat in our vehicles at the Little Pit Drive-In at Abbey Gardens and watched the award winning feature film, Pariah, and short, Trevor, both dealing with the challenges of coming out, and identifying as Lesbian and Gay. Also two surprise videos!

We were socially distanced in our vehicles, pizza & beer were available on-site, and door prizes were awarded for the best decorated Pride vehicles. There was one very noisy Mustang convertible driver, however, who kept restarting her engine, disrupting those around her.

MINDEN PRIDE TRIVIA NIGHT
Question: What was different about Minden Pride Trivia this year?
Answer: Minden Pride went virtual. Hosts Jack Brezina and Sean Pennylegion presented an hour and a half of Pride-themed questions, both challenging and fun.

Teams, with their delightfully creative names, had a great time answering the numerous questions. There were prizes (the winner claimed 2020 Minden Pride Trivia bragging right), and lots of fun as the evening unfolded.

FRIDAY August 30

Completely Outrageous Virtually Incredible Dance Party
Many people (not me) shook their booty online with the LGBTQ+2 community and allies. People participated from around the world. Door prizes were awarded for the best costumes!

SATURDAY August 29

PARADE YOUR PRIDE COLOURS
• Due to COVID-19 we had to come up with a new way to celebrate Pride in our community.
• Many people found creative ways to support pride as we celebrated Minden Pride’s 5th year: wore Pride t-shirts and caps, put up Pride flags, wore colourful rainbow accessories.
• The  Minden Pridemobile toured around the county stocked with Pride stuff.

• 47 businesses participated in the Scavenger Hunt.

Together We Rise
On this day, June 12th, 2016, 49 lives were stolen On this day, June 12th, 2016, 49 lives were stolen at PULSE nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

On this day, we remember the 49 people who were out living - dancing, loving and freely celebrating - in what was meant to be a safe space during Pride month.

It has been 9 years since that tragic day and we still carry their memory with us.

We still grieve. We still remember.

Our theme for Pride in the Highlands 2025 - Together We Rise - is a reminder to honour their legacy not just in remembrance, but in action. We continue to unite in love and in joy and in power so that everyone, no matter who they love or how they identify can live freely.

We continue to unite as we strive to make the Haliburton Highlands a place where Everyone is Welcome.

Together We Rise.
Happy Pride Month! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 June Happy Pride Month!
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
June is Pride Month and the kick-off to Pride season in the Highlands. As we embark on another summer full of community events and social gatherings we are thrilled to share some exciting news from our Vision 2025 Town Hall held at Pinestone Resort in Haliburton.

After nearly a decade of growth and community engagement, Minden Pride in the Haliburton Highlands will officially transition to Pride in the Highlands.
“What began as a celebratory picnic in opposition to homophobia has evolved into a cultural pillar in our region,” said Chair Allan Guinan. “As we broaden our outreach, it’s become clear that our name should reflect the full diversity and complexion of the communities we serve.”

The new name, Pride in the Highlands, celebrates the four municipalities that comprise the Haliburton Highlands: Minden Hills, Algonquin Highlands, Dysart et al, and Highlands East. The change signals a renewed commitment to one of our organization’s core values: inclusivity.
While the name is changing, we are embracing a thoughtful transition. “2025 will be a year of evolution,” said Co-Chair Chris Hewson. “We’ll still have the Pride Mobile, the flags, banners, and all the infrastructure that’s been built over the years — none of that disappears overnight.”

Look forward to a new website: prideinthehighlands.ca, launching later this summer and some fun new merchandise available wherever you see the Pride Mobile.
The 2025 Pride in the Highlands Planning Committee invites residents, partners, and allies to join us in this exciting year of celebration and transformation as we honour the impactful legacy of Minden Pride: moving forward together — proud, united, and inclusive — into the future of Pride in the Highlands.

Minden Pride in Haliburton Highlands would like to Minden Pride in Haliburton Highlands would like to extend our thanks to the Dysart Council for their decision to fly the Pride Flag during our annual Pride Week Festival August 18th to 24th.

The new flag policy was adopted by Council at their November meeting and the Pride Flag is now a pre-approved community flag that is to be raised annually in Dysart et al during Pride in the Highlands.

While this moment has been long-awaited by many, its arrival is no less powerful. This simple yet profound act sends a clear message: everyone, no matter who they love or how they identify, is valued and belongs here.

While division can so often overshadow unity, the Pride Flag is more than just a symbol for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. It is a beacon of inclusion, affirmation and hope for everyone.

This step forward offers an opportunity to grow as a community. To proudly share our values of kindness, respect and dignity. To celebrate our diversity and reaffirm our commitment to building a future where each of us is included.
A commitment for which all of us at Minden Pride are grateful.

We will continue to build Pride in the Highlands and create a community where Everyone is Welcome. Together We Rise.

- Minden Pride in the Haliburton Highlands Planning Committee
All of us at Minden Pride in the Haliburton Highla All of us at Minden Pride in the Haliburton Highlands are committed to creating and sustaining safe, inclusive spaces both online and offline.

In light of META’s recent announcement that it will no longer fact-check posts across its platforms or monitor hate speech, and its decision to remove protections for minority groups - including members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community - our use of both Instagram and Facebook will change going forward.

We unequivocally do not condone META’s new direction. We believe these policy changes compromise the integrity and safety of the online spaces where many of us once found connection and validation. We no longer believe that META’s platforms can serve as safe environments for our community to engage.

As such, we will be making the following changes to our social media use:

We will be disabling comments and hiding like counts.
We will no longer engage in chat functions on either platform.

We will continue to post information about community events, our generous supporters and our annual festival. Our commitment to communicate transparently and meet everyone where they are remains unwavering.

Our community’s resilience and solidarity are stronger than any single platform and we will continue to provide trusted spaces where everyone can engage, share their experiences and support one another. As we work to explore alternative communication options and expand our engagement resources you can continue to reach us at connect@mindenpride.ca.

Thank you for standing with us as we work to uphold the values of dignity, respect and inclusion in every space we share. Together We Rise.
