History of Tea Dances

The late-afternoon tea dance became popular in the U.S. and England in the ‘50s when morality laws restricted same sex dance partners, and liquor establishments were threatened with losing their licences if they were found to be permitting dancing between the same sex. So the gay community held these dances to be able to socialize and dance with one another. Tea dances are a very traditional, historical and fun part of our culture.
